The Golden Bridge held up by giant stone hands at Ba Na Hills

Your destination guide to

Timeless Vietnam

A night on a Halong Bay cruise, lantern-lit Hoi An, the Golden Bridge at Ba Na Hills and Hanoi's Old Quarter — plus Phu Quoc's beaches if you want to end on the sand. One of Asia's best-value holidays, and here is how it works.

Why Vietnam

It packs three holidays into one.

The limestone islands and overnight cruise of Halong Bay in the north, the lantern streets of Hoi An and the cloud-top Golden Bridge in the centre, and Phu Quoc's white-sand beaches in the south. Hotels, food and sightseeing cost a fraction of Europe — so a 4-star trip is well within reach for families and honeymooners alike.

Getting there

Recommended flights from South India

There are no direct flights from Tamil Nadu or Kerala, so you connect once in Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur or Singapore. Fly into Hanoi and out of Da Nang (or Phu Quoc) so you never backtrack.

  • Chennai

Via Bangkok or Kuala Lumpur · Thai Airways, AirAsia, Vietjet, Malaysia Airlines · ≈ 7 – 9 h total

Open-jaw ticket: into Hanoi, out of Da Nang. Vietjet also flies Chennai–Hanoi/Ho Chi Minh direct on select days.

  • Bengaluru

    Via Bangkok / KL / Singapore · Thai Airways, Singapore Airlines, AirAsia, Vietjet · ≈ 7 – 9 h total

Vietjet and IndiGo operate select direct flights to Ho Chi Minh City / Hanoi.

  • Kochi / Trivandrum

Via Kuala Lumpur or Bangkok · AirAsia, Malaysia Airlines, Thai AirAsia · ≈ 8 – 10 h total

Choose a connection with at least 2.5 h for the terminal change at KL.

  • Madurai / Trichy / Coimbatore

    Via Chennai + Bangkok / KL · IndiGo + partner · ≈ 10 – 12 h total

Trichy–KL on AirAsia, then KL–Hanoi keeps it to one foreign connection.

Within Vietnam, Hanoi–Da Nang and Da Nang–Phu Quoc are short domestic flights (1 h 20 m – 1 h 40 m) on Vietnam Airlines or Vietjet — your consultant will time them to fit the itinerary.

Packing checklist

Your Vietnam checklist

Vietnam's e-visa is quick and fully online — sort it early and the rest is easy. Here is what to prepare and what to leave behind.

What to packThree climates in one trip — pack in layers
Documents to carryInternational travel — e-visa essentials
Leave behind / avoidCommon slip-ups in Vietnam
  • Confusing the Dong's zeros — a 20,000 and a 500,000 note look alike. Count carefully and prefer Grab/cards for bigger spends.
  • Unmetered taxis and 'friendly' motorbike offers — use Grab, Vinasun or Mai Linh taxis only.
  • Drones without a permit — leave them at home; they are confiscated at Halong Bay and Ba Na Hills.
  • Shorts and sleeveless tops at pagodas and the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum — shoulders and knees must be covered.
  • Tap water and ice from street vendors — stick to bottled water; restaurant ice is generally safe.
  • Large luggage on the Halong cruise — take an overnight bag on board; the main suitcase stays with the driver.

Good to know

Good to know before you go

  • Give the e-visa time

Approvals usually take 3–5 working days but can stretch in peak season — apply at least 2 weeks before you fly.

  • Tipping is appreciated

Around 100,000 VND per day for guides and 50,000 for drivers is generous; round up at restaurants.

  • Grab for everything

Download Grab before landing — cars, bikes and food delivery at fixed fares in every city.

  • Cruise cabin tip

Cruises run on a strict schedule; be at the harbour by 11:30 am. Choose a 4-star cruise for larger cabins and better food.

  • Vegetarian is easy

Say 'an chay' (vegetarian) — Buddhist 'chay' restaurants are in every town, and Indian restaurants exist in all three cities.

  • Safe and friendly

Vietnam is very safe for families. Watch bags on busy Hanoi streets and cross roads slowly and steadily — bikes flow around you.
